Working

3rd July 2003 at 13:05Comment
I've started working. Well, I started a couple of days ago actually. I've got quite a bit of work done. However, none of it has actually made a dent in my holiday list of things to do. Which worries me slightly - I've had nearly 3 weeks of holiday now, and haven't done any of it. It was going to be cutting it fine before :/

So today I aim to start that. However, first I have to finish adding a new section to the tonbschl site. It's quite a large section. It will probably take me all day (well, I just woke up, so I'll probably manage to be productive from till about 3am, with a couple of breaks for television). Whenever I get this finished, I will then have nothing in the way of starting my package-based ascii file version managing system. And once I have done that, I can start on a new version of USML. And once that's done, I can upgrade the tonbschl site, and start on the many many thing s I want to do to radiac.net :)

Never gonna get it done :p

And this guy has too much time on their hands :)

I just spent £56 on play and play USA (good luck with that, all you regular readers from the offices of play.com)

£56. That would be ok...

BUT I DIDNT GET WHAT I WENT THERE FOR

Bugger.

Compsci paper

8th July 2003 at 12:48Comment
I've been cleaning my room. Very thoroughly. I have gone through each sheet of paper, each CD and am about to start going through each floppy disc, and either filing them or throwing them away.

During this process, I found a Compsci paper (PDF) from 1991, and thought that you would appreciate it. And before you ask, I have no idea where it came from, other than probably a friend who used to go to Cambridge.

Mmm, lunch

This is one of the most rediculous thing I've seen.

Awwwww nuts

11th July 2003 at 01:082 comments
Tomorrow (or later today for some people) will be the start of the 6th week of my holiday, I believe.

I have got none of my pseudo-work done.

Not done my package manager, or a new usml core, or started on any usml packages.

That, of course, means I haven't started on the re-do of this site or of planetriscos.

And although I've made a start on some of the stuff I'm writing in risc os (namely I got a module to compile), none of it's working yet.

Nuts.

Well, at least I haven't been completely unproductive; in vice city, I have collected 100/100 hidden packages, done 36/36 unique jumps and 35/35 rampages, and held up 15/15 stores, not to mention completing level 12 paramedic, vigilante, fire and pizza delivery, bringing my grand total of percentage completed up to 91%.

And then holiday courses start in a couple of weeks.

Please god, let me win the lottery tomorrow, or at least find a rich woman to marry and divorce and take half her money, so I can avoid the screaming kids. I don't even have a week off this holiday; they're telling me each of the 6 weeks is booked up full, with the exception of week 6, where they only have the morning course, but not to worry, they're pretty sure the afternoon course will fill up by then.

Sure, I can't compare this job to an office job like Nat, Tristan or Mark are doing, and whoever else has started their placement by now (ie Andy, Tom?), since the only experience of it I've had was a week of work experience in London Transport Busses, where I think I caused more problems than I solved. I also believe I fell asleep during meetings. But I would imagine that in such jobs you have responsibilities, tasks due by certain times, people you can ask questions of, and the only person you need to keep happy is your boss.

Whereas when teaching, I have to entertain (but keep under control) 15-20 screaming unruly children, usually aged 7-12, for 4 hours a day, to such a degree and in such a way that they don't go home and complain to their parents. It is very exhausting. And the longest I've taught in a row was 3 weeks of courses. I have a feeling that this is going to be hell.

And the two hours of break I am supposed to have, and that I take so much pleasure in ramming down all of your throats, is usually more like 1 and a half (after you take into account getting the kids to/from the room etc), and I usually have a list of problems that the kids have caused on their computers, but which I can't get the kids to fix because it would take too long. Sure, I get paid more per hour than you guys working in an office, but I reckon I earn it.

My work experience at LTB was in the same office as tech support, which is supposedly one of the worst jobs in IT. Pfft, if LTB were anything to go by, you guys have it easy compared to what I go through.

Oh, and by the way, I have now completed my A-Z collection of DVDs, with X-Men and Yakuza Graveyard. Think I'll watch one of them now.

Good night.

I would just like to say two things

100% in vice city! I have my minions! Oh, and when 'Highest media attention' gets to 2076, the rating is 'Stuff of legends'.

Joy.

Finally, I can get on with some work :p

It was chris' birthday today. Unsurprisingly and true to form, he didnt show up till late, and didnt have anything to drink. Didn't give us shirts either. Should have expected that, but for some reason I just dont expect him to let us down EVERY birthday...

Yay

Have finished adding another section to tonbschl. And it doesnt sound like anyone's going to the pub tonight. Maybe I'll watch Deep Impact instead.

Went to the pub

20th July 2003 at 00:26Comment
I went to the pub anyway. I drank stuff. It was fun.

One day before the holiday courses start!

I have design and publishing, followed by computer art. Computer art's OK, but D&P is a bad one; the courses are out-dated, the kids do these things at their schools. Of the 3 courses I do, D&P is the one I like least. What a way to start... Still, after that I've only got one more D&P, with 5 computer art, 3 (possibly 4) WWW. Don't like that one much either. Think what I'll do next year, if I do it next year, will be to change the courses into one computing course, where they draw pictures and surf the internet. They'd love it, and it would be a fun course to teach. I'd like to bring back the BASIC course, or some other kind of programming; that was fun too, but the problem with it is that there's too much of a skill range there, especially to teach them programming in 8 hours...

Ahhhh. So, holiday courses again. First year was bad because I was new at it, and the kids were a nightmare. Second year was bad because I changed the courses, and the kids were a nightmare. Third year was bad because the kids were a nightmare, oh, and the aircon broke down in the middle of a heatwave and I had a couple of them pass out. This is the fourth year. Easter was bad, because the kids were a nightmare. Damn I'm looking forward to this lot. I'm sure everything will be fantastic and I won't end up a crazy person.

Going well

21st July 2003 at 12:46Comment
I've been here since 9AM, and taught for 2 hours. It's the first time I've had free so far, but since today is the first day of the week, I only have half an hour off.

Anyway, it's going really well. Printers don't work, Publisher doesn't work on two of the computers, and the internet only works on two. Well, at least the afternoon group don't need the internet yet. Morning group was going to though, so that was a fun hour.

Oh, and we've got the holiday record set at 41 minutes. I have also decided to introduce an award (given to a group - obviously without their knowledge) for the sickest and most depraved image (the SAMDI award) they come across. I reckon this group have won the award.

Don't ask.

Let's just say the filtering software doesn't filter google image searches, and that it doesn't filter images by skin tone. Not that that would have made much difference in this case...

Oooh, and, very appropriately, the number of this entry is 666. Feel like I should do something special for it, so, thanks to Google, here is a picture of the Dark Lord himself:

this will be replaced at some stage, ie when I get home tonight and can FTP stuff

The afternoon class is great.

2 children.

Well, 1 child aged 8, and one person aged 17.

They sit in complete and total silence.

That in itself would be ok, but they perform the aforementioned act while staring at me.

I don't want to go back tomorrow.

Uni Exams

22nd July 2003 at 18:002 comments
I passed my exams. For those of you returning to Uni next year, I shall see you then.

And the courses are still hell.

That is all.

Woo, funnage

23rd July 2003 at 22:39Comment
So, one day left in this weeks teaching. Spoke to another teacher yesterday about how I was back again... I told her it was my 4th year and how it was scary, she said this was her 16th... How she's managed that I dont know. Neither does she.

Seriously, since I started teaching, I've gained so much more respect for all my teachers, past and present...

Earlier I was thinking about what I've done in my 4 years of teaching, and I've worked out that I've uttered several phrases far too many times on these courses:
"ok, go to file, page setup, click there and there, click ok, go to file, print and change the printer to Colour Laser x"
(approximately 1000 times)

"ok, go to edit, copy, click on the title bar of the other image, no, the title bar, no, the gray bit, no, the title bar, no, this bit, here, let me, ok, good, right, now go to edit, paste, as new selection. good, now change to the selection tool... no, the selection tool... no, up, up, up, down, up, yes, thats it, now click right mouse button and you'll stick it to the back"
(approximately 1500 times)

"gooood, no, not quite, up/down a bit"
(approximately 12,800 times)

"Pack up and shut up, I want to fuck off home"
(approximately once)

And I have absolutely no idea what I'm going to do with the afternoon course tomorrow. Short of having them make websites, there's nothing I've done in the past that I've got left to do with them. This will be fun!

So anyway, on an unrelated note, I seem to be getting new e-mails every time my mail client checks my accounts! It's brilliant!

It checks every 3 minutes...

I've picked up nearly 350 spams in the past 3 days, 440 exactly over the past 4... and today's not even over yet!

Woohoo! I feel so wanted!

On which point, I shall leave you to give play some more money.

Have you ever...

Anyone else ever been in the situation where you're sitting in someones room, chatting to him and his girlfriend, when you realise that they want to have sex and you're the only thing stopping them?

And if so, am I the only person who, at that point, chuckles to himself and then strings the conversation out over another 3 hours?

Yay and Ernie

24th July 2003 at 00:01Comment
Finally stuck something slightly more worthwhile on yay.org.uk. Still just a temporary thing, but it'll get better, honest.

Also released a new version of Ernie, which you can get here... fixed a little bug in it where it would count the index file as a site to validate, but not a link; as a result, when I ran Ernie on yay.org.uk, the result summary stated that out of 31 links, 32 were valid... Anyway, that's fixed, and it now complains in the summary if there aren't any links on the first page, or the first page isn't found at all.

'ear dis, yo!

Pub, wheee

26th July 2003 at 12:201 comment
There are 3 girls who work in my local pub; they walk round selling shots from large bottles which they carry on hip belt thingies.

They know me.

They say I'm their best customer.

Last night, the two who were working spotted me from the other side of the room and came over. Every time they walked past. The one time they walked round and I wasn't there (toilet/bar, can't remember), they sat down and waited for me to return...

They sold me 5 shots, and gave me 3.

Wow

National Insurance Sucks

Last week I paid £17.50 in National Insurance. Something seems very wrong with that. I'm pretty sure it was only £2 or so at first...
