End of the holiday

Well, I go back to university in about 10 or 11 hours. It's been quite an eventful holiday, but now I am packing.
GRRRRR

Went on the freshers pub crawl tonight.
Some bitch scrawled 'ESSEX K8' on the back of my woo yay shirt. My special b3ta shirt that isn't for sale any more. Very upset.
Other than that, tonight I got drunk. Woo yay.
Edit: Found you can still get them, ordered a replacement, not so upset. Woo yay!

Good morning everyone, going up to the freshers fair. Time to liberate some pens for the cause!
Productivity: 34% and rising

The freshers fair was OK - nice lot of pens, but nothing particularly exciting (was a bit too late) - got a squashy ball though, bonus.
Today, I made half a website and upgraded the firmware on my router. Woo for me!
Tristan was supposed to wake up this morning because we were going into town for a pizza. But he didnt - no surprise there. However, tonight I had an indian meal that was far too large for one person, so I left a lot of it and am feeling pleasantly full.
Oh, and essex k8 will pay dearly for her actions.

I'm sitting in the library listening to the new Dido album (which finally arrived this morning). It's pretty good.

Internet Fun
10th October 2003 at 07:344 comments
Well, two days ago notnet went down for a few hours (and in the process doubling its downtime for the past 4 years, so I can't really complain too much...), which meant no e-mail or websites for a while. And yesterday, my adsl went down, which meant no internet till this morning. *sob*
Yesterday we did the society fair thing for BCSS (bath computer society society or something), we signed up 78 people, which was pretty good. Ended up getting home at 10pm - with a 9.15, thats quite a long day :)

Final year project...
10th October 2003 at 17:35Comment
I have submitted my choices for final year project; very unlikely to get my third, and my second and first are the same (just with different supervisors); a webcam-based touch screen system. Should be cool, if I get it. I'd better get it, otherwise I will cry. Mercilessly. I will know next week.
In other news, my 'Led Zeppelin - Remasters' cd arrived yesterday (another purchase as a direct result of downloading MP3s), and 'Matrix Reloaded' arrived today. Will watch that later :)

We Love Online Banking

Just logged into my bank to check how much my flatmates owe me this week, and got one of their helpful popup messages:
Well, that's handy, in case I forget my name, date of birth, home address or telephone numbers, but when I can still remember my 12 digit ID code, my password, which must be over 7 characters in length and contain letters and numbers, and my memorable information, which must be over 6 characters and also contain numerical and alphabetical characters.
In other news, today I woke up.
Oh oh oh wait, no I remember, actually I've done loads of cool stuff since my last diary post.
A friend of a friend of Tristan's came to stay on friday - she was called Kelsey (sp?), and she left today. They went off and did stuff in bath this weekend, so I didnt have to put up with him, which was nice. Just kidding Tristan, now go get me my tropicana.
I think I've given him my cold now. Well, if I have, to be more accurate it would be him getting it from me, since I'm as careful as I can be not to pass it around, ie I stay in my room and dont go into other peoples... On the other hand, he might have picked up one from somewhere else, in which case he has now given it to me, since he's been in and stood at the side of my desk and talked to me twice tonight. If you know the size of my room and the space at the side of the desk, I think you'll agree that if it's a different cold, I'll have it by now :)
Back to the excitement. Saturday, I watched the matrix reloaded, and it sucked as much as it did the first time.
Last night we crashed Matt's party. Well, kinda; he had sent a friend an SMS saying 'all welcome', so she assumed that included us, and passed it on. However, what she failed to pass on was the other bit of the message, which read 'dress smart'... poor Tristan.
We ended up sitting in the corner on what I can only assume was the children's table; around us were people dressed in smart casual and dresses and tuxes, sitting at their tables being very polite and appropriate. And then there were us, breathing in the helium balloons, eating/snorting sherbert dib-dabs, and blowing bubbles all over the table from those soap bubble bottle things. It was a lot of fun :)
And Laura drew pictures of us. Which reminds me, sometime I really must put up the wallpaper I drew.
We have introduced a new 'Personal details' screen, which will display your name, date of birth, home address and telephone numbers.

Paid the electricity and gas bills today. I need 39 cheques from my flatmates and myself; 9 from all four of us to cover the rent for the rest of the year, and 3 from them to cover gas, electricity, phone and internet from April. I have 23 cheques, 6 missing from Jason (for Feb onwards), and I bet you can guess who I'm waiting for the 10 from...
So anyway, funky web links. Even though I'm keeping yay.org.uk fairly up to date, I haven't had any fun links on here for quite a while, so here we go.
First up is The Whitehouse (thanks Peter), with Arnie's first statement as Governor, some letters from kids, and information about Operation Infinite Purity.
Then there are the usual interesting news stories, this time about washing, shoes, and more shoes.
Of course, there are always people with too much time on their hands...
And just for egg, here's a couple of web games: Krassair and Rocket Mania.

I have decided to buy a childs tricycle. I will carry it up to uni in the morning and a bag, and then in the evening, I will ride it down the hill. I'll probably pick up so much speed that I'll overtake busses. How much will that rock... you're sitting on a bus, minding your own business, look out of the window and see a guy on a tricycle whizzing past, knees up around his ears, accompanied by a barely audible scream.
How come the internet is so bloody boring? There's nothing to do, apart from read news sites, refresh them waiting for them to do something, and make crap diary posts. Nobody talks to me online any more, or leaves comments in this thing either; I just guess I'm either too boring, or you lot are too busy laughing at my face.
OK, so here's the deal. As soon as you read this (yeah, right now), send me an IM/email/message/letter saying where you are and what you were doing before you read this. That's an order. And once you finish reading this entry, post a comment to it saying 'Moo!'. I want to see hundreds of comments just saying 'Moo!'. OK? Good.
Boredom factor 9! Capt'n, she canny take much more!
Hmm, what can I do now?
I know, I'll write everything I think about over the next 10 minutes in here:
I'm bored.
I think i'll listen to that mp3 again.
I'm bored.
My eyes hurt, I think I'll take out my contacts soon.
I'm bored.
OK, that's 10 minutes up. See, told you I'm bored. I think I'll go write some code. Because it's not like that's boring or anything...

I have released version 1.0 of smess for the playground plus talker base; it allows you to leave short messages for people when they are logged out, and they will receive them the next time they log in.
Oh, and if you haven't already, read the entry below and moo!

We Love Geographical Limericks
18th October 2003 at 16:416 comments
Ok, I've given up on the Moo thing, I've got 10 and probably won't get many more. Thank you for all that helped :)
So anyway, Limericks. The internet is full of them, but mostly they don't rhyme (or even worse use the same word twice) and/or have really bad rhythm. And let's face it, the only real limericks are geographical ones, ie ones that start with 'There once was a [person] from [place]'. I believe I have found the only one on the internet that doesn't suck:

There was once a man from Darjeelingand I fixed this one so it works better:
Who boarded a bus bound for Ealing.
It said on the door
Please don't spit on the floor
So he stood up and spat on the ceiling.
There once was a man from PeruSo, on the back of the Moos, todays challenge is to find me more geographical limericks that don't suck, and post them to the comments section!
Who wanted to build a canoe.
He got to the river
And found with a shiver
He hadn't used waterproof glue.
New smess
19th October 2003 at 00:15Comment
As is traditional with these things, I have released version 1.1 of smess within a day or two of 1.0. This version does not suffer from name case sensitivity :) Also fixed a couple of other little things. There will no doubt be another new version at some point, but hopefully not just yet.

We just went to the pub, it was fun. But I have a 9.15 tomorrow, so good night.

This is a diary entry.
Yes, once again, I have run out of things to do on the internet, so I thought I'd tell you a little of what has been going on in my life since I last posted an entry.
Well, let's see. I released another version of smess fixing yet another bug, I went to uni, had some lectures, um, had some food, uh, hmm, watched some television, urr, yeah thats pretty much it.
The title for this entry is from the lyrics of the Azumanga Daioh theme tune. This song is even more addictive than The Littlest Hobo Theme, I kid you not (although I'll never know the words :p). And the episodes appear to be as good, although I've only watched the first two so I guess I can't pass judgement on the rest just yet.

Dumb Quiz Time
22nd October 2003 at 19:481 comment
Just saw a quiz on laura's LJ. I don't normally do these things, because i always think they suck, but this one is a list of firsts and lasts, and, knowing my memory, I thought it might be an amusing exercise to probe it and see how much I really do know. That, and a really good way to waste time that I should be working. Meh, degrees are overrated.
FIRSTS
first best friend: Oooh, tricky. I think his name was Thomas. I was 2 or 3, he was asthmatic and lived down the road. I'd make him laugh, he'd have an asthma attack, I'd find it hilarous and laugh so hard I'd lose control of my bladder. Ahh, good times...
first real memory of something: Yellow wellies. I was wearing them while walking through a field in Devon.
First real kiss: Well, I'd guess that would be when my mum first saw me. Well, I'm assuming she would have kissed me at that point, since that's the kind of thing that happens to new born babies. Ahh, good times...
First Job: Being nice to distant relatives count? Heh, just kidding, I do that for free (I mean I'm in their wills, right? ;) ). Hmm, how about freelance website design? No? 24/7 on-call tech support for my mum's friends? Well, failing that, teaching computing holiday courses when I was 16. There was a 15 year old in the second class I taught, which sucked.
First crush: I was at boys-only schools till I was 18... Ahh, good times...
First screen name: radiac. Must have been about 5 or 6 ago years now? Bought the domains, t-shirt, sweatshirt AND the mug.
First self purchased album: That michael jackson one. Ahh, good times...
First funeral: The concept of having more than one is a little too buddist for my tastes.
First pets: Moo moo, Tinky and ack, forgotten her name. They were pekinese dogs, though they weren't mine - my mum and gran had them long before I was around, I just turned up in time to make the ends of their lives a misery. My first pets were fish, although they didn't last too long. Ahh, good times...
First piercing/tattoo: I can't remember if I had my ears pierced before my eyebrow. Although the first tatoo was the one on my chest.
First credit card: Barclaycard. They need to love me more and give me a higher limit.
First enemy: Justin something, I think. He stamped on my brief case the first time he met me, my first day at school in a new form after jumping a year. Ahh, good times...
First big trip: Croatia. Stayed with friends on the coast. It was just when the latest war was kicking off. The serbs burnt the forests off the mountains behind their house the week before I arrived. Ahh, good times...
First play/musical/performance: The crappy place my parents sent me when I was 3 did a nativity play. I think I played the pirate ninja.
First musician you remember hearing in your house: My mum, on the piano.
First band: Elastic. Ahh, good times...
LASTS
Last cigarette: Not recent enough. I don't actually smoke, but my bastard friends at the pub have a two-packet-a-day habit, so I get addicted just sitting there in the pub with them, then when I get back to uni I have nicotine cravings and find myself following people who are smoking down the road. Ahh, good times...
Last big car ride: Coming back to uni.
Last good cry: I really can't remember.
Last library book checked out: That would be something by Enid Blyton. Ahh, good times... Hmm, I wonder how much they'd charge me in late fees if I took it back...
Last movie seen: The Emperors New Groove.
Last beverage drank: Volvic. Ahh, getting bored with this.
Last food consumed: Pasta. Ahh, now I'm remembering why I don't do these quizzes.
Last crush: Apple juice.
Last phone call made: Home.
Last time showered: This morning.
Last shoes worn: On my feet.
Last CD played: Circular, with a 'Led Zeppelin' label on it.
Last item bought: Paper from WH Smiths on the way home today. No sooner had I walked into the store than the security guy came up to me and asked 'Can I help you, sir?'. I told him I was after some paper, and he pointed me at it. And then subtly followed me around the store until I left. Either I look dodgy, or he was very bored. Who knows, maybe it's my face... Ahh, good times...
Last annoyance: Every time I push a key down with my left index finger, it hurts. While in the shower this morning, I managed to stab myself under the fingernail, with the fingernail on the other index finger. I was trying to wash my hair, but it was too early to be that coordinated. It bled. Ahh, good times...
Last soda drank: Sprite. I used to have a 20 can a day habit, don't you know? The time I got through something like 60 cans in a weekend was when I realised I should probably cut back. And I've nearly managed to stay clean for the past 3 years, too. Ahh, good times...
Last ice cream eaten: In the holiday.
Last shirt worn: My replacement Woo Yay shirt! ESSEX K8 MUST DIE!
Last website visited: Wikipedia. In particular, the Chewbacca Defense. Oh, how I love South Park. Speaking of which, the next episode is playing tonight in America, marking the start of the second half of the 7th season.

We Love Crazy Busses
24th October 2003 at 08:455 comments
Last week there was such a long queue for the bus I usually get (8.34), so I decided to get the 8.22, figuring I could easily find something to do for 12 minutes.
The bus took a short shortcut, completely skipped out the town and got us here in under 15 minutes.
So now I have about 25 minutes to waste.

That flatmate of mine has, once again, taken to running into my room when I say I'm going to bed, and then hovering in the doorway making noises at me. Once he kept me up for nearly 2 hours with it...
Guess I'm going to have to go back to not saying good night...
Ooh, he's left. Now's my chance...

Woke up this morning, did some work on my project, went up to uni and hung around in the foyer of bloodbath for a bit (film thingy that bufs were helping with), popped into the buncs lan for a while and played monkey ball, then went to the pub and wandered past the cinema on the way home, and saw that Kill Bill had just started, so we went in and saw it. It is a fantastic film :)

Isn't it fantastic? And super-scary?
I have also copy-pasted my latest comments function from my admin section, because I got fed up having to type in my username and password.
For future reference to those who are interested, the link to the latest comments section is also available from the diary archive index.

28th October 2003 at 16:20Comment
So today I've been doing my project proposal. I really should have gone to see my supervisor last week, but I felt that since I'd already gone to see him about my project idea before allocation that I should have something new to show. And of course I didnt start writing anything till the weekend.
Anyway, been working on it since 9 (apart from travelling time and time wasted talking to people), and I now have a whole page written. I will finish it tonight (the other 4 pages), take it in tomorrow and see my supervisor about it. Hopefully he'll say "Wow, thats great, go away and look at this stuff too", I'll go away and look at the stuff, fix it up, take it in again on Thursday and he'll sign it and say it's my project.
What will actually happen is I will nearly finish it today, and then tomorrow I will go in without anything to show him, I'll talk to him for a while, he'll say "Well, actually that's not such a great project, do this one instead" and I'll be screwed screwed screwed.
I should have gone to see him last week.

Well, I think I've finished the first draft of my project proposal, now to print it.
But of course, my printer isn't installed on mir, because I reinstalled Debian.
Every time I try to get printers working via samba in debian, I have problems. However, this time I have found this handy howto. Printing from windows over the network where the printer is on a debian machine. Sounds promising :)

We Still Love Labour

Evidently jealous of the recent Tory joke, Labour have wheeled out the big guns once again.
Time to welcome back Spam Warrior Extraordinaire Derek Wyatt, Labour MP for Sittingbourne and Sheppey. You may remember that just over a year ago he called for ISPs to be held responsible for pornographic spam. And maybe also remember that my friend Ben was not too impressed. Possibly because he runs an ISP.
And so enters Labour's answer to spam and votes of no confidence: postcode based e-mail addresses. No, seriously, I'm not kidding. Go on, click the url. See?
You can stop laughing now, it's not that funny.
Well, ok, maybe it is.

Project Proposed, Failure Imminent

Handed in my project proposal today. However, I didn't have it signed, because I couldn't find my project supervisor. This is probably related to the fact that I haven't gone to see him at any point since I first talked to him about it.
Arggh I'm screwed.
