Am I Going To The Pub?

2nd August 2002 at 19:32Comment
I don't know if I'm going to the pub tonight or not, since I don't know who'll be out. I think it would be a shame to break with tradition; it'd be the only Friday while I'm at home that I'd stayed in since, um, heh, about April 2001.

Anyway, this is class, and these guys are my kind of nutters :)

Radiac's Status

6th August 2002 at 15:00Comment
The radiac's status section now tells you what MP3 I'm listening to and what computers on my network are turned on (it only checks 5 due to timeout restrictions - this will change when I get round to showing what each computer is doing).

Also added a guide to linux, which isnt actually anything like a guide to linux, it'll just have little linuxy things that you may find useful. There's just something for storing apache virtual hosts in an sql table.

PG+ Draughts Fixed

I've fixed a few bugs which were in my draughts patch for playground plus. You can get the latest version (1.1) from radiac.net/pgplus.

I've been drinking, and I'm feeling extremely patriotic. Wooo.

Land of Hope and Glory, Mother of the Free,
How shall we extol thee, who are born of thee?
Wider still and wider shall thy bounds be set;
God, who made thee mighty, make thee mightier yet.
God, who made thee mighty, make thee mightier yet.

Yay!

I'm teaching again. This week I have Design and Publishing in the morning, and WWW in the afternoon.

I ALWAYS hate this course (DTP - and please note how I use all of the HTML formatting tags I can remember to subtly and yet strikingly re-enforce my point). However, so far it's going brilliantly. The kids are great, it's a small group, and they're laughing at my jokes. That, or they're laughing at me. Either way, they're enjoying themselves. That will probably change when I run out of things to tell them tomorrow at about 12.15, or when they tire of my jokes and can no longer get away. Then it shall become hell for all of us.

Dunno anything about the afternoon course. WWW is the one I have to do most work in, because they have to take something home with them, and HTML goes over their heads most of the time. They usually manage well enough to put some writing on the page etc, but get confused with tags. So I make their websites for them. Woo.

This keyboard is all sticky and greasy. Why, I hear you think (yes, it is true, I can hear your thoughts)... well, Andrew Rowson took the courses for the last two weeks, so I don't want to know. If you do, ask him yourself.

12 minutes to find pornography. Frightening.

He beats the record of 26 minutes, set by a little girl on my WWW course 3 weeks ago.

They Suck Their Fingers

13th August 2002 at 15:59Comment
I've worked it out.

The keyboards are so sticky because they suck their fingers.

I knew it couldnt be down to sugar consumption at break times, because they'd keep a lot on their fingers, and nobody's fingers could be that bad.

No, they sit here and suck their fingers, and then wipe them over the keyboard, mouse and monitor repeatedly while searching for the 'b' key.

How lovely.

Anyway, looks like that's it for today. Time to go home. Good good. Hasn't been a bad day either :)

Mmm

I'm bored.

They're drawing pictures.

I've checked sluggy, diesel sweeties, Jack, User Friendly, WIGU, BBC news, Ananova news, Slashdot, The Register, New Scientist, b3ta, WilWheaton.net, play, Think Geek, stick it on your wall, , spent far too long trying to get onto the score board on this, and discovered that the proxy is blocking this and this.

They're drawing pictures.

I'm bored.

Having a bad day today.

Woke up late after sleeping badly.

Got stuck behind some idiot who wanted to do 30 all the way in the 60. Then when I get to Tonbridge, the road at the entrance is being re-done, so I had to park in the road round the corner. I couldnt remember how to parallel park (heheheh, oops), eventually got in the space, got to the road and the roadworks guy told me not to press the button. Took me half an hour to get in today, usually takes me 10 minutes.

Got in and remembered that I'd forgotten something I'd promised somebody.

I cant think what to do on the course. Well, I can, I just cant think how to make it last 2 days. They took out one of the labs, which took out two of my days' 'lesson plan' (if you could call it that).

Hmm, two random asian people have just walked into my computer room and started using the computers.

Argh, one of the kids is talking to himself...

Guess it's just one of those days. And I'm pretty sure it's just going to get worse.

Please send me an email or sms (if you know the number) - I'm bored and having a bad day :)

Oh, and to those of you who are getting your A-level results today, good luck :)

Yay

15th August 2002 at 14:11Comment
I've had emails and sms', the morning group is actually pretty good, and the afternoon group is getting on with their websites very well. As in some are playing games, some are surfing, and none are asking questions. And my car hasnt been broken into!

An excellent day after all ;)

On a vaigly related note, I have recently become aware of the national insurance I have to pay on my earnings. I have to pay approximately £15 per week, which is equivalent to an hour of work. So, since, in effect, I will not be paid for an hour each week, I have decided to take half an hour of the last day of each course off. If I leave here at 11.45, I will arrive home at 11.55, giving me 10 minutes at home to leave at 12.05, and get back here at 12.15. I will tell the children that I will be back in a second, and that until I return, they are to remind themselves of how the internet works, a phrase which I use frequently. I shall then repeat this at 3.15.

Oops, I Did It Again

Was driving home from the pub last night (after drinking only lemonade, in case you were wondering), coming round a bend when a car came towards me with their headlights on full. I couldn't see a thing, so slammed on my brakes, rather than driving into trees or the car. And of course, my wheels locked, I skidded along the road, smashed into the pavement and came to a stop back on the road, just in time to see my hub cap do a graceful arc across in front of me. It was pretty scary at the time, and if I'd not steered where I did, I'd either have ended up in a house or in or around the driver seat of the other car...

So anyway, got out (other car nowhere to be seen), found out my front wheel was completely screwed, the rim completely mangled, tyre was flat etc. Was about to phone for some help (no idea how to change a tyre etc), when a man came from a nearby house and helped me change it. Well, when I say 'helped', I mean he changed it while I pointed the torch.

Hmm. In the end, I had a crap morning, crap day, crap evening, almost required severe medical attention and now need a new tyre and hubcap. And I guess this I'll have to get my wheels realigned again. Maybe this time I should try and get kwik-fit to sponsor me...

Oh well, time to go get the kiddies. Wheee!

Last week of holiday courses tomorrow. Yay!

Hmmm. Holiday courses tomorrow.

Yay.

Just been to see 8 legged freaks. Fun film.

WWW and Computer Art tomorrow. Tempted to lecture the WWW group on Perl, and tell the CA group 'Load MS Paint and draw pictures'. Or I could attempt a small-scale version of the 'infinite monkeys on infinite typewriters will eventually write a masterpiece' saying, and hope I end up with something I can print and sell for millions...

Bed time :p

I'm Breaking The Planet

20th August 2002 at 21:18Comment
This BBC quiz told me:
If everyone lived like you, we would need 2.6 planets.

Well, sounds like we need more planets. Or less people. Soo, anyone else for moving France to the moon?

Got in late.

Have pretty much just sat here for the past 45 minutes while the kids play on the new-look Harry Potter website! And there are new games! Oh joy!

7 hours and 15 minutes left...

No more courses! I've got 3 or 4 weeks before I go back to uni, wheee.

Slashdot is running a story linking to this article, about why P2P isn't killing the music industry - it's not selling music, because the music is crap. Waaaay. More of this and we might get someone more useful talking somewhere more useful :)
